The encyclopedia contain background information about the Riverlands and it`s inhabitants. None of this has any direct impact on how the game is played, but as a resource for imagination in the effort to make the world come alive.

Greenvale

The Greenvale is a city located in the temperate hills, where the vegetation is lush. Greenvale grew around a water source and a well-traveled road, and is comprised largely of humans. They are a patriarchal feudalist sophocratic constitutional monarchy that worships many deities, the most common being Ariadne.

The nearest landmark is a pit that is at least 50 feet deep. The bottom is always obscured in thick fog. A population of 7140, the denizens live a modest existence. A funeral is currently taking place.

Lady Nataline Rane

Government in Greenvale

The people of Greenvale work the land in exchange for working their lord’s lands. Affairs are handled by the scholars, the head of whom is Lady Nataline Rane.

Economics

Trade is rather free in Greenvale, and people live a modest existence because of it. There are few taxes, and there is little regulation from the authorities on what merchants can and cannot sell. Welfare is good. Citizens can expect death services, and other services such as healthcare and education, provided they are able to pay for it.

Law and Order

There’s a decent guard presence, and citizens know better than to step out of line, as The People of Glemgarden are armed. Despite this, brutality is rare, and citizens with nothing to hide have nothing to fear. Law in Greenvale is somewhat reform-based, and those that breach the laws can expect hard labor, incarceration, or fines. The death penalty is typically reserved for traitors to the state. Magic is reviled by the guards, and they look for any excuse to put away a magic user. It is coded into law as a restricted activity, so they have an easy time of doing it, too.

Scholars Guild (Huge)

“The Unknown Order is a scholars guild. It’s very new, and the huge faction has an excellent reputation, and is motivated by power. They are rumoured to dabble in forbidden magics.”

Governance

It’s ruled by Avyrie Rose, who was the original founder. She is quite competent, and her position is very stable due to the lack of infighting for the leadership role. Bribes are uncommon, and frowned upon.

Members

Members of The Unknown Order are identifiable by their absentmindedness. Membership requires some social status, and costs two hundred gold pieces. The initiation into The Unknown Order involves an oath to be taken.

Resources

They have many resources. A significant number of trade goods are part of those resources. Also at their disposal are binders full of blackmail material, and binders full of magic scrolls.

Politics

The Unknown Order have an immense number of people to rely on for aid;
A veritable army of craftsmen will answer a call for aid, as will a veritable army of knights, a veritable army of wizards, a veritable army of politicians, and a veritable army of mercenaries. The Unknown Order have a few rivals; A guild of assassins are the enemies of The Unknown Order.

“The People of Glemgarden is a commoners union. It’s brand new, and the large faction has an excellent reputation, and is motivated by politics. They are distrusted by those in power.”

Policing

Greenvale is policed by The People of Glemgarden, rather than a separate guard. The guard is slightly underfunded, and their equipment sometimes falls into slight disrepair. Their officers are held accountable for their actions, though The People of Glemgarden does not have the funding to perform regular training exercises.
One can recognise a member of The People of Glemgarden by the amulets with a sigil.

Law in Greenvale

Law in Greenvale is somewhat reform-based, and those that breach the laws can expect hard labor, incarceration, or fines. The death penalty is typically reserved for traitors to the state.

Governance

It’s ruled by a cabinet of 12, who were the original founders. They are reasonably competent, and their positions on the cabinet are relatively unstable due to internal power struggles. Their meetings are held once every three weeks, and are are open to members. Bribes to the cabinet will be bargained about.

Members

Members of The People of Glemgarden are identifiable by amulets with a sigil. Membership requires a generous donation, and costs three hundred gold pieces, provided there’s an empty slot. The initiation into The People of Glemgarden involves a pledge.

Resources

They have significant resources. A significant number of artifacts are in their proverbial warchest, as are a fair few debtors, a handful of trade goods, and barely enough gold.

Politics

The People of Glemgarden have some strong allies;
A veritable army of fellow commoners and a veritable army of monks can be called on for aid. The People of Glemgarden have more enemies than one would expect; A guild of assassins are rivals. Other enemies include a guild of nobles, and a guild of thieves.

Guards Watch (Huge)

“The Redcrest Five is a guards watch. It’s very old, and the huge faction has an excellent reputation, and is motivated by power. They are involved with a certain bloodline.”

Governance

It’s ruled by Maxim Holley, who was able to rise to power by completing an ordeal. He is usually competent, and his position is stable due to internal power struggles. Bribes will usually be rejected.

Members

Members of The Redcrest Five are identifiable by fighting to the death. Membership requires referral by an existing member, and costs two hundred gold pieces. The initiation into The Redcrest Five involves a simple form to be filled.

Resources

They have extensive resources. A room full of gems are in their proverbial warchest, as are a significant number of magical trinkets, a handful of contacts, and chests full of gold.

Politics

The Redcrest Five have an immense number of people to rely on for aid;
A veritable army of thieves will help if called upon, as will a veritable army of knights, a veritable army of craftsmen, a veritable army of assassins, and a veritable army of nobles. The Redcrest Five have some enemies; A guild of assassins are the only that wish The Redcrest Five ill.

“The Craftsmen of Greenvale is a craftsmen guild. It’s somewhat old, and the above average sized faction has an above average reputation, and is motivated by money. They are rumoured to be under investigation.”

Governance

It’s ruled by Kayler Moore, who was the most charismatic of the group. He is quite incompetent, and his position is falling to pieces due to conflicts with rivaling factions. Bribes are a regular part of business.

Members of The Craftsmen of Greenvale are identifiable by the ring that members are given. Membership requires some social status, and costs a hundred gold pieces. The initiation into The Craftsmen of Greenvale involves an oath to be taken.

They have limitless resources. Sheafs of blackmail material are in their proverbial warchest, as are a fair few debtors, a handful of contacts, a handful of favours, and a significant number of trade goods.

A couple scholars will answer a call for aid, as will a veritable army of mercenaries, a veritable army of politicians, and a guild of merchants. The Craftsmen of Greenvale have more enemies than one would expect; A guild of bandits are rivals. Other enemies include a guild of commoners, and a guild of monks.
